About oaks

Gopher Valley Journal is the story of our work to rehabilitate a remnant Willamette Valley Oregon white oak savanna and woodland. It’s on Gopher Valley Road.

When I say “remnant” it implies that there once was 1) a much larger amount of this habitat, and also that 2) it is currently in tatters. Both true…

So why repair just a small part of the original?

What is an oak savanna, and how is it different from and oak woodland?

Where and when did this ecosystem exist?

Why would one want to “go back” to a landscape of the past?

How do you know what the landscape was like anyhow, now that it is altered so drastically

Such rich subject matter! Let’s get started … Click the links in the sidebar and read posts for more info.
